Brown Mackie College — Findlay

The students in the Allied Health Club wanted to do something special for students on campus. They were the leaders in a campus-wide drive to collect non-perishable food items, toys, and Christmas items for fellow classmates and students. They were very successful in their efforts and were able to provide five large Christmas baskets of food and gifts. In addition, the Club donated two large boxes of food and miscellaneous toys to the local Salvation Army. The Allied Health Club consists of Medical Assisting, Pharmacy Tech, and Healthcare Administration career majors and meets every week.

Students, faculty and staff at each college hosted a blood drive with the American Red Cross. The school with the most participants won a certificate to be proudly displayed recognizing the generosity of the winning campus. The Michigan City blood drive was held on October 18, 2006 and succeeded in recruiting 50 potential donors who ultimately yielded 29 units of blood. The Fort Wayne blood drive was held on October 17, 2006 and succeeded in recruiting 30 potential donors who ultimately donated 23 units of blood. The generous contributions of both campuses provided 52 units of blood and will help 156 people.

Brown Mackie College — Kansas City

The school's Student Senate actively helped others during the 2006 holiday season, both on the campus and in the local community. Through many fundraising activities, students donated gas cards and paper products to the local battered women's shelter, sponsor a canned food drive for the needy, and participated in the campus's Salvation Army Angel Tree project this year, purchasing 9 gifts for children in students' families. The efforts were led by Jo Kernahan, evening vice-president, Amanda Kellerman, day vice-president, and Demetrius Kemp, president of the Senate.

Brown Mackie College — Kansas City's Beta Kappa Omicron chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (an international honor society for students at two-year colleges) is participating in a two-year service project "Operation Green: Improving Our Communities." The chapter has instituted paper and aluminum can recycling on campus, and is active in sponsoring and co-sponsoring other projects and fundraisers to benefit the school and others.

Brown Mackie College — South Bend

In August, Brown Mackie College — South Bend lost (figuratively) two faculty members during a demonstration for police procedure for Criminal Justice students. The instructors participated in the annual St. Joseph County Muscular Dystrophy Association "Lock Up." Sheryl Gerald, medical assisting program director, and Shirley Mapes, physical therapy program director, volunteered to be "arrested" to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy by soliciting pledges while "in jail". Prior to their arrest they collected donations from family, friends and co-workers and worked the phones after being sentenced by the judge. At the end of their two-hour sentence, Sheryl and Shirley raised enough money to send a child to summer camp.
